Book Cover Designs…

I was really pleased with the way the cover came out on our new book collection, Balls Of Fire! More Snuffy Smith Comics. But, as is true with most of my artwork, it was not the first cover illustration I drew.  I threw many drawings away before I even finished sketching them out.  Some never made it past rough sketch form.  And some made it to a tightly pencilled state using my light table before they were tossed out.  But that is just part of the process for me.  I created quite a few designs that ultimately did not work for one reason or another.  But the one selected was my editor, Brendan Burford’s, favorite design and my favorite design, as well!  We were both very happy with it!   So you can have an idea of the process, here are two pretty tightly pencilled cover designs that did not make the cut and the one that DID!

Happy Easter!!

As I have written before on this blog, I always enjoy creating comic strips that are themed for the holidays!  In the spirit of the season I thought I’d share with you some of my favorite Barney Google and Snuffy Smith comic strips from years past with an Easter theme. I hope you enjoy them!

On My Drawin’ Board…

It's fun drawing all the animals that reside in Hootin' Holler!  This week I'm working on an upcoming daily comic strip that features lots of the Smith's farm animals!

It’s fun drawing all the animals that reside in Hootin’ Holler!  From wild animals to farm animals, there are a lot of them!  This week I’m working on an upcoming daily comic strip that features five of the Smith’s farm animals.  They all look happy since it’s mealtime.  This is a section of the original art in that particular strip.  It was a joy to draw!
